Dark Wings, Dark Words, Light Meat

It's Back!! Winter is Coming and it Came... and went... and with it, Spring... and a new season of Game of Thrones.

So after the Red Wedding...

And the Mother of Dragons liberating the slaves of Mereen...
It's time for Mysha and I to feed our children... and prepare for the premiere tonight!

As Mereen seems like a combination of Africa, Morocco, and the Middle East, a little flavor is in order. (We're not into mutton here, so chicken is going to suffice!)

Myhsa's Pyramid Chicken
Set crockpot on high for 30 mins and added:
juice of half lime (other half for slaw dressing)
juice of half an orange
rind from most of orange in large sections
1/2 c wine (yes, WINE... the water of Westeros and Essos across the Narrow Sea.)
1/2 c chicken broth
1/4 c Xylitol... Splenda or sugar if you like
Allow to heat up, stir.
Browned package of bone in chicken thighs, using sesame oil
 Turn and brown both sides
 Turned and crisped the chicken
Then added to crockpot, setting to low for 6 hours

Dothraki Sea Grass Slaw
Assembled a coarse slaw, using a broccoli slaw mix and red peppers, diced
Dressing:
1/2 c mayo (or other)
1/2 c leftover low carb teriyaki sauce (could use regular bottled)
juice of half a lime
1/4 diced cilantro
2 pkts Splenda
Whisk and then toss with slaw, refrigerate until later.
Now Dessert....Second Son Daario's Gift... also known as these other 2 are, ahem, short lived for the series

This part is fun and easy.... get some pikes...because you gotta have pikes!
 Get some strawberries
Spike them. (I used a heavy glass candle holder with a chunk of styrofoam to hold the berries in place.
Melt some chocolate (micro at 50% power in 30 second increments)
Then dip and put in fridge to chill/set.
Once chicken is done cooking/crockpot dings/you just can't take it any longer - remove chicken and peppers to platter.
Turn crockpot up to high and add half a block of cream cheese, cut into chunks. Curse the gods, old and new and even the drowned god, because the picture LOOKS oriented correctly in preview, loads to blogger sideways. Even save anew.
Ser Barristan mislikes this breach in formalities.
Sprinkle on 1TBSP guar guam and whisk until thick and creamy.
 Drizzle sauce over chicken
Pour a little wine or Targaryen "Fire and Blood" ale (from World Market)

Fit for a queen, no royal testers needed!

Self Control VS Give me ice cream

I'm pretty sure that Laura Branigan is singing about ice cream...
In the night, no control
Through the wall, something's breaking
Wearing white, as you're walkin'
Down the street, of my soul

At night time, I totally want ice cream... vanilla ice cream is as versatile as it is yummy....

You take my self, you take my self control
You got me livin' only for the night

I, I live among the creatures of the night
I haven't got the will to try and fight

Creatures of the night... like chocolate... dark chocolate...hot fudge sauce....?

Against a new tomorrow, so I guess I'll just believe it
That tomorrow never comes

Unfortunately, tomorrow DOES come... so I must find some lower carb solutions to those night time cravings....
Above, I've mixed 2 melted dark choc bars (nuke at 50% power, first 1 min and stir, then in 30 second increments, stirring til smooth. Slowly add 1/4 c heavy whipping cream. Set aside. for 8 carbs total) For the ice cream, I've whisked:
2 C heavy whipping cream (0 carb)
2 C unsweetened coconut milk (2 carb)
3 tsp vanilla (0 carb)
4 TBSP Xylitol (0 carb)
4 pumps sugar free vanilla syrup (0 carb)
Read your labels for carb counts!!
Add to ice cream maker til frozen
First night, hot fudge sundaes with peanuts.... layer spoonfuls of the hot fudge with peanuts:

Freeze remaining ice cream. NOW, I'll admit that once frozen, this concoction loses it's "soft, ice creamy" texture. However.... chunking it into a couple of glasses and pouring diet root beer over doesn't suck.... which is why you need the straws...

A safe night, I'm livin' in the forest of my dream
I know the night is not as it would seem
I must believe in somethin', so I'll make myself believe it
That this night will never go

Oh Oh Oh... Oh o Oh..... I would cut a bitch trying to take away my self- I mean ice cream...

You Dropped a Bomb on Me

Two bombs, really. After an entire summer of needing 4-5 gallons of milk per week, I now have nearly TWO gallons of milk dated YESTERDAY. The kids miscreants do this to me a few times a year. They fixate on something, eat/drink TONS of it to the point that I can't seem to KEEP it in the house without buying 2 or 3 at a time then- KAPOW! It becomes hazmat lurking in my fridge or panty.
I'm going to need at least three ways to diffuse the situation

You dropped a bomb on me, baby
You dropped a bomb on me

Starting off with some potato leek soup: leeks, potatoes, celery, and an onion.
Dice veggies, and dump in crockpot along with 1 box chicken broth, ground pepper, and preferred seasoning. I used Penzey's "Bouquet Garni".
Set crockpot on low for 4 hours. Veggies will be very soft and tender, even the celery.
You could probably whisk, or put through blender- I use adore my immersion blender.
I don't want it entirely smooth. I blend up 2/3's or so.
Slowly stir in enough milk to achieve the right "soup" consistency. I used about 4 cups.

We were in motion, felt like an ocean
You were the girl for me
You were the first explosion, turned out to be corrosion
You were the first for me
But you turned me out, baby
Another use for extra milk is the simple frittata. Or baked egg casserole if you have men in the house... as "men don't eat quiche."
I mixed 9 eggs (the number I had left) and @4 cups of milk. This will create a fluffier frittata, with some extra liquid after baking.
Added seasonings, I used ground pepper, Herbs , sprinkle of nutmeg, and stirred together.
Thinly sliced a zucchini and a leek. Microwaved for 6 mins. Stirred. Microwaved another 6 mins. Drain excess liquid.
Added most of a package of ham lunch meat, sliced and spread across zucchini and leeks.
Spread shredded cheese, about 1.5 C. I'm sure my 14yo son will eat. this. up.
For the grownup tastes in the house, I put spinach, blue cheese, 2 small sweet peppers, 2 leftover sausage links, and a sliced up garden tomato into a pie dish.
Pour the eggs mixture over both dishes. Oven has been preheated to 350.
The pie sized frittata took a full 60 mins to bake.
This one was much larger and deeper and took 1 hour and 45 mins to bake!!
 Worth waiting for, however...

Just like Adam and Eve, said you'd set me free
You took me to the sky, Id never been so high
You were my pills, you were my thrills
You were my hope, baby, you were my smoke
You dropped a bomb, hey, babe

And, getting close to wiping out the remainder of the 2nd gallon.... Preheat oven to 350.
6 C milk, 6 eggs, 3/4 C cocoa powder, 4tsp vanilla, 1 C sugar (1/2 C sugar - 1/2 C Splenda here). Whisk together, pour into lightly sprayed dish.
Place dish into a large pan, adding hot water to create the infamous "water bath" necessary for custard. Why? I don't know... it's just done! The cocoa powder will separate and float to the top, looking kinda gnarly, honestly. Don't panic.
Set timer for 15 mins, took custard from oven, whisked choc powder into milk again- this time the milk was hot and the choc blended. Put back into oven for an hour+, til center was set.
Chocolate custard on top, chocolatey base settled at bottom. Serve warm or chilled.
